I. Don’t. Wanna. Not even an adult “want to” – it’s “wanna.”
This adulting thing is lame… sometimes. Taxes, learning advertising rules, credit card debt, getting the lienholder off my car title, cleaning my desk – eeewww, I’m done with all of it. So, things languish.
For example, my husband and I have been toying with the idea of creating dedicated workspaces for each of us. We’ve both been working remotely and crampedly (is that a word?) for too long. We both came to the conclusion that we didn’t want to be apart, but finally admitted that our work was suffering because our day-to-day goingons conflicted too often and resulted in excessive distractions. It took a long time to come to this, but we needed to be the teacher that separates the buddies in class for the overall good, including their own.
I would remain in the office we had shared and he would move into the hodge podge room. Don’t worry, he wasn’t just chucked in a corner and forgotten. I wouldn’t allow that. The hodge podge room (as of this morning Feb. 27, 2023) is finally at a spot where he feels good about the energy and layout. All of the exercise equipment was moved into my office, minus a few free weights he wanted close, and the majority of all our other adventures – mostly my stuff from being a serial hobbyist, but that’s a story for another time – was rearranged, rehomed, donated, or recycled as best we could. The room really is his style now. It’s just the way he likes it.
Here’s what my corner of the office looked like before.

I don’t have photos to show you the whole room since Hubby didn’t agree to share his privacy, which I respect whole heartedly. But I’m sure you’ll be able to imagine how cramped and chaotic things might have been before.
Also, there’s a whole lot more shoved into each basket and container than should be. Those took awhile to declutter in order to make room for other things.
Here’s the room now.

Isn’t it nicer now? I certainly think so, otherwise why bother you all with it? Everything feels good and flows now. Ugh, why didn’t we do this two-plus years ago when I renovated the room (mostly myself) and got new floors (definitely a contractor)? We just hefted everything back in as quickly as possible and got to work again.
The motivating inertia stalled, that’s why.
Another example. I’m staring at the date and realizing that the calcified motion of preparing social media content for you all is stalled inertia as well. For example, I posted St. Patrick’s Day offerings weeks ago and failed to complete cycle. The inertia just pooped out. For what it’s worth, I’d like to blame some of this constant struggle on my neurodivergence, but I won’t let myself. Well, maybe a tiny bit, like 5%. You just have to figure out how to work with your disabilities sometimes and get sh*t done.
To show you the inertia fizzle out on the room, here’s the after-photo I was going share. There was a whole lot more piled up on the treadmill than the photo shows.

I had a whole “it’s okay!” speech ready. That wasn’t enough for me today, though. Sometimes it really is okay, I’m drained and other times I’m trying to cop out early. This was one of those cop out days. So, I took a breather, found some patience and compassion for myself, then finished the job. And I’m so glad I did. That last push has given me the momentum to finish my workday strong.
It’s taken ages to understand my personal internal inertia stuggle and neurodivergence, as well as acceptance and all the other therapy woowoo stuff I’ve been doing over the years. And you know what, friends? I’m grateful for every struggle and moment of clarity that eventually follows. Despite most likely grumbling about it along the way.
I don’t know if this will help anyone out there who’s also in a never-ending noogie match of sadness with Inertia, but I hope it provides some level of value for someone.

You aren’t alone. You are amazing. You are allowed to influence your own inertia.
Take care! 💙
